From the Comic-Con International 2003 Events Guide:

"Secret Origin of Good Readers—For the third year in a row, Dr. Robyn A. Hill (teacher educator), Mimi Cruz (manager, Night Flight Comics, Salt Lake City), and Mike Carlin (DC Comics, Senior Group Editor DC Universe) will present the "Secret Origin of Good Readers." The panelists will discuss and show how teachers, librarians, comic stores, and comic book publishers can work together to bring comic books into the classroom for use as an innovative and motivating teaching tool. Through a multimedia presentation, personal remarks, and a question and answer session, the panelists will highlight specific ways that comic books can and have been used to engage a variety of learners. Attendees will receive a complementary goodie bag featuring free comics and the 2003 version of the panel's companion resource book, a 60-page volume also titled The Secret Origin of Good Readers."

A message from Robyn A. Hill

On behalf of my co-presenters, I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of THE SECRET ORIGIN OF GOOD READERS panel at the 2003 Comic-Con International: San Diego. This year's attendees received a print copy of the updated companion text, "THE SECRET ORIGIN OF GOOD READERS: A Resource Book" (courtesy of Comic-Con International), as well as free comics, including Supernatural Law and Mavis (compliments of Batton Lash and Jackie Estrada at Exhibit A Press), Batman Adventures (thanks to Night Flight Comics in Salt Lake City), Superman 10-cent Adventure, Donald Duck, and Archie (donated by Robert Scott of Comickaze in San Diego) and Rising Stars ˝ (courtesy of Top Cow and Matt Hawkins). Due to numerous requests for additional copies of the resource book from teachers, librarians, and comics retailers, Night Flight Comics, with the support of Aros.net, has generously provided space on the store website so that I am able to offer the book in PDF format online free of charge. That way anyone who would like a copy, need only download and print one. I ask only two favors:

  • 1. Please read and respect the "terms of use" for the book listed below.

  • 2. Please let me know what you think. I am always looking for ways to upgrade and expand "The Secret Origin of Good Readers" and would really appreciate your ideas and suggestions. My contact information is on the last page of the resource book, or you can write to me care of this website: Dr. Robyn A. Hill
